JAILmake pop-up studio at Tent London

South London designers JAILmake have condensed their 205 square metres studio into just five square metres at design show Tent London, where they’ll be working on a new brief every day (+ audio).

The team is working on a range of open briefs, including architecture for bees and the transformation of a Detroit underpass into a public space.

The pop-up studio is equipped with a small number of tools along with computers, texture samples and basic materials such as clay, wire, card and timber.

“The ethos of JAILmake is to understand the manufacturing process alongside the design process, so we do both simultaneously,” designers Jamie Elliott and Liam Healy told Dezeen. “It’s really important to us that designing and making are inseparable.”

For the London Design Festival, JAILmake also worked with PAN Studio to create stalls for Be Open, a market for emerging designers at Tom Dixon’s studio space in west London. The entire project was conceived, designed and built in a week.

For London Design Festival 2012, JAILmake present a new project called ‘205-200=5’. The aim of the project is to take the 205 sq m studio that we currently occupy in south London, subtract 200 sq m and condense it down into a 5 sq m experimental exhibition and work space at Tent London on Brick Lane.

Before the show a number of designers and magazines will be targeted, requesting briefs and questions to be answered by the small team working in the space. Each brief will be given a minimum of half a day’s work. This will be spent researching, sketching, modelling, contextualising and developing with a set of prints being produced as outcomes. The objects designed might be anything from a jewellery to a building.

The space will be equipped with a small number of the tools from the JAILmake studio along with texture samples, a library of ‘reference objects’ and basic materials (clay, wire, card, paper, timber).

JAILmake and PAN Studio were also asked to design pop-up exhibition stalls for the Be Open Space, an instant flash market for emerging designers at Tom Dixon Studios, part of London Design Festival. In keeping with the notion of immediacy presented by Be Open Space, the entire installation was conceived, designed and built within seven days.
